Brett Barlow

Brett Barlow graduated from the Layton Auxiliary Campus of the Utah College of Massage Therapy in December of 2000. Upon graduating, Brett started developed a name, business cards and opened a private practice out of his home. Since opening his practice, Brett has almost doubled his clientele each month. Along with his private clientele, Brett is also working part-time at a fitness center and has been promoting wellness through on-site, seated work for several local corporations. He recently sent the Layton Career Services Department the following e-mail message in hopes of sharing his experience in the industry with current and prospective students:

"My name is Brett Barlow. I am thirty-five years old. I have a beautiful wife and two very energetic, handsome young boys. I live in Ogden, Utah and enjoy snowboarding, mountain biking and backpacking. Basically, I love to play in the great outdoors.

"It all began about a year ago when I was selling cars for a living. I was working long hours away from my family in a job that was not satisfying. I was ready to make a change, but wasn’t sure what to do. I had a kink in my neck that had been bothering me for months and was visiting my chiropractor about once a week. However, the kink always returned.

"One day my wife heard an ad for UCMT on the radio and said, ‘Massage would be a great job for you.’ I decided to go check it out. I went to the [Open House] presentation and received a very professional massage. It was terrific and my kink was gone! I was quite impressed and began to realize the benefits of massage. I signed up and started class a week later.

"While at UCMT, I received the education of a lifetime. I learned more in those seven months than I thought possible. I also received immediate rewards by coming home and working on friends and family. My boys would constantly ask me ‘what kind of massage did you learn at school today Dad?’ I answered and they asked, ‘Can you do it to us?’ I would then proceed to spend hours showing them what I had learned. My family and friends were always happy to let me practice on them!

"After graduation I was excited to start my new career. I believe that I had truly found my calling in life! I studied to take my tests and began to develop my business name and [business] cards. I was fortunate to receive help and support from my family and friends.

"It all started to come together when I jumped at the opportunity to advertise my services. I have always been a risk taker and did not hesitate to grasp at the future possibilities. With the continued support of friends and family, as well as the advertising, my private practice began to grow.

"My business has almost doubled each month. I am working out of my home to keep my overhead low and have plans to create a private office. I have acquired accounts to perform seated massage for major corporations and have received several job offers in the area. I am currently working part-time at a fitness center.

"I am still looking into the future and believe that my new found profession will allow my family and me to travel the world, which has always been my dream. I am looking for career opportunities worldwide! I hope that you will also have a positive experience while attending UCMT. However, you must realize that much of your success will come from determination, continued support from family, friends and Career Services, as well as your strong vision of a brighter future!"
